“[My first car was] honestly, a piece of shit, but it was my piece of shit. I've never loved anything in my life the way I loved that car. I crashed it, but it was my first sense of freedom in listening to whatever music I wanted to listen to and having personal, private time.”
“He lights up a room” is an often overused phrase, but when Michael Cimino joins our shared Zoom, it was like the entire space was transformed by the glow of his voice alone. It turned out that I did not need to spend nearly as much time as I did testing the lighting in my room. The vibrancy of his photoshoot, which took place near his home with his classic car collection, was reflected in his demeanour. He was immediately warm, enthusiastic, and charming. Those emotions amplified with each passing moment of our conversation.
We spoke about the process of preparing for Motorheads, and how it felt like a full-circle moment for him as someone who has always had a diehard passion for classic cars. As he described his childhood imaginings, “I'd have Hot Wheels race and I’d make little scenarios for them,” I thought about how amazing it must be to watch such a specific dream come to fruition in a way he couldn’t have imagined back then. It felt like a perfect depiction of hope, and like an ideal glimpse into Michael’s life as someone who is trusting in the process, and who is looking forward to discovering all the places he might be speeding off to next.
