Life can feel like a blank canvas. Booboo Stewart moves through time with this in mind, as though every moment is to be discovered and explored. Nothing feels out of reach for him as he leads each day with mindful awareness, guiding him through every winding river and curving road of his journey as an artist. The backdrop of Booboo’s paintings, drawings, and sculptures is a reflection of our time together as we sit to chat, surrounding ourselves with expression. There is something about speaking to a fellow creative that feels like a homecoming, as we dig deep into emoting through art, vessels for creation, and fears along the way.
Our print issue title, "Revolving Revelations" is about how discovery is a never-ending journey. We welcome back in a lot of past talents this issue, one being Booboo. We first met him in 2020 at his family's ranch. Now we meet him at his California home to explore his art studio, walk his dog (who wears a very dapper tie), and jump on his bed. Each time we meet Booboo, he greats us with an openness that is rare. He welcomes us in to his space, quite literally, but also in every way imaginable. He talks candidly about fears, normalises asking for help, and shares his passion for his art in every form - drawing, dance, and music. We focus particularly on his black and white drawings especially in how they help him and the viewer to self-reflect.
Here is a sneak peek of our conversation:
Some people look at my drawings and think they’re a bit dark and lack colour. But I also find that same type of person standing there looking at it for a long time. Even though they might not show certain feelings, I think most people can relate to the feelings that surface when looking at my art. I don’t show faces in my pieces, but the figures still carry the weight of a certain emotion, and it allows the person to feel it for themselves. These feelings and emotions come to the surface because they're looking at this faceless image emoting something that's reflecting it. It's not something I intended to do in my drawings, but I'm so happy I landed in this place because it's very healing to be able to draw that.
We talk about his artistic journey and he says for now he's "just enjoying the view." You will too if you buy Issue 17 and see our photo shoot, we promise.
