Matt Sato for Issue 16

30 May 2024

There is something intrinsically powerful about the ocean. It is its own living, breathing entity - it possesses great depths, but also has the unflinching ability to let go. Learning how to let go is something Matt Sato is striving to achieve. He’s aware of the fine line that exists between what you think of yourself and what other people think of you, and he’s hopeful that, over time, he’ll be able to let go of what other people think to more fully embrace himself.

Photographed by Elizabeth Weinberg, Matt dances across RAT (right after Torrance) beach in California dressed in silk and sequins. The sun sets at the end of the shoot, as he basks in the golden glow. For our print issue theme, "Breaking Waves", we had to have a beach shoot. There was no one better than Hawaii-born Matt. In our shoot, we see a free-spirited side to Matt, but in our conversation, we also see another side of him - the Matt who is trying to be fearless but admits he still has ways to go. We talk about his most recent project, Imaginary (very fear-filled) and childhood days spent at the beach and in movie theatres with his family (very much not fear-filled).

"As I've gotten older and experienced more, I care a little less. I've seen other people who have succeeded by not caring what people think. I will still get embarrassed about little things like if I mess something up, or if I'm not sure about the way I look in an outfit, I will doubt myself. But I've changed in the way that, if there's something I want to do or I feel is best for me, then I'm going to do it.”
