Hero. What a name. After watching the After movies, being impressed with how he captures your attention as a viewer and feeling his feels through his impactful performance, I have wanted to work with him for quite a while. And here we are, at the gorgeous One Hundred Shoreditch Hotel in London. He walks in smiling and we settle in. I ask him if he likes photoshoots and he says “No.” Respect. Now I know we can speak honestly to each other and have a great shoot.
For our cover conversation, Cecilie chats with Hero about his newest project, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and all the things that came from it - reading “the wrong fucking book”, looking just like his grandad, feeling like “the skinny white guy” next to Henry Cavill and Alan Ritchson, and being told by Guy Ritchie to ‘Just be cool’. We also, of course, talk a little bit about After because how could we not?
"You get better as you go along because for the first After movie - for lack of a better phrase - well there’s not a better phrase, I was shitting myself! But every time I start to prepare for a role, I always have the thought of like, How the fuck do I act? It’s such an immeasurable thing."
To feel like you're sitting across from Hero at a restaurant table, chatting about life and all of its joy, pain, and fear, buy Issue 16. He also casually dropped quite a few life lessons over eggs on bread. Don't ask him who said the quotes though, he won't know. "Balance" is a keyword in our conversation, with Hero also telling us how he achieves it whether it be on the football pitch, at a sauna, or at work. But mostly the football pitch - this is us formally asking someone to put him in a football film. Harris Dickinson, stay away! (You won't understand that without reading the issue, so buy now!)
