Sam Harwood Gets Poetic On Us

11 December 2012

So young and yet such an old soul; 16-year-old Sam Harwood at Models 1 really surprised us when we met him on the shoot for our “Suit up” editorial. We made sure that we took some time out during the busy schedule that day to have a proper chat with him and boy we were glad that we did.

Having only been modelling for a short while, Sam is still based with his family in Buckinghamshire and enjoying his school sixth form life. Very modest about his looks, Sam was already perfect in our eyes… and then he read us poetry… all written himself. And to top off this boy of perfection, he surfs too. A surfer dude who writes poetry; now can you see why we were so quick to fall in love?

Unfortunately we weren’t able to convince him to grow his hair out long, but no matter, we adore him anyway and Cecilie Harris' “Suit Up” editorial (also featuring Roman Kemp) turned out beautifully. How very dapper the boys looked! Read on to meet the lovely Sam.

How did you get into modelling?
My mum sent photos when I was 13 and they kept telling me to come back and back and so on, until they decide last year that I was ready.

So how long you've been modelling now?
Since early July, I started in summer.

Styled by RACHEL GOLD, Sam wears SUPERDRY and TIMOTHY EVEREST for SUPERDRY.

What's been your favourite part since then?
I don't know… I like working. I like traveling around London and the attention haha.

Where would be your favourite place to go to to model?
New York definitely… or Milan, somewhere like that.

What do you like about the attention?
I don't know… the girls! Haha modelling is a good chick magnet (thought I’d just throw that one in there).

If you could get a campaign tomorrow, what would be your first choice?
Burberry would be a good one to do, I like Burberry Prorsum; also Belstaff Jackets, they’re pretty cool. Definitely something like that.

Yeah Burberry is lovely, you’d look very good in that.
I was watching the Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer ‘13 show and I really like the metallic shirts. I thought they were really cool.

What are your three favourite things in the world?
Thats difficult! Sport.

What kind of sport?
Extreme sports … and then rugby.

How hot do you look in your rugby outfit?
What on a scale from 1-10?

Yeah.
I look quite small I think, It's really tight-fitting, but I'm quite small compared to some of the other big lads, the more bulky ones… so yeah, rugby and sport.

Haha you still haven’t answered the question! (See how he avoided that!)
What, how hot do I look? I don't know, on a scale from 1 to 10... maybe 7?? A low 7?? I don't know, just like average, like 6?

Awww… its ok we’ll let you off!
Hmmm what else… my house, I like where I live and my family, obviously. School too, it’s good.

You like school?
Yeah, I’m enjoying sixth form, its good. I like the English literature course a lot; yeah that’s probably my favourite thing, and my friends… all the usual things.

Let's go to your list of random things.
Surfing is the first one.

You surfer boy! How long have you been surfing?
About 12 years, since I was about 3 or 4.

When are you going to grow your hair longer so you can be a surfer dude?
Haha! I’m not going to grow my hair long!

No? But you could look so cool and you could flick it!
Some of the life-guards I know have long hair in the front and short hair in the back, it's pretty cool.

So, your second random fact?
My poetry. I started when I took English for GCSE and I decided that it would be quite cool to publish an anthology. So I’m going to write few more poems, note them down… and try to sell them! I think I've got something on my phone, it’s pretty short though, just one stanza.

Can you read it to us so we can put it in?
Yeah sure:

My love said she’d marry only me,
But Jove himself could not make her care,
Of what men say to love, as you’ll agree,
One writes on running water or on air.

Very cool! You gave us a poem… you get 10 points!
Haha, thank you!

That was great, surfing and poetry, how does that go together?!
It's a bit of an odd combination.

What is your third random fact?
Ah it’s so hard to think of one when you put me on the spot! My favourite role model is Steve McQueen and my aim is to be on… Have you heard of MrPorter.com… well the stylish list has loads of people, and he's on that; Michael Caine is on it too… I want to be on that before I die, I think that would be a cool thing to have against my name.

Any last word from you, Sam?
Don't do drugs, kids.

Very wise words Sam! Thanks for being super lovely.
