Loneliness often tangles with absence. Absence of people, of noise, of somewhere else to be. But out here, beneath a low grey sky, being alone might mean something else entirely for him. Perhaps it is simply room. Room for a thought to wander, for a world that is only his, even if just for an afternoon. The light arrives softened, filtered through clouds like sun through linen, carrying the faint melancholy overcast skies so often hold. And yet nothing about it feels heavy. If anything, it feels like an exhale.
Through Mariana Valente’s lens, the line between his world and the countryside begins to blur. What lies on the other side seems to be movement, comfort, a quiet sort of freedom. There, even an old fountain becomes somewhere to be. Long since run dry, it was built for water, for wishes, for coins tossed over shoulders, and now it holds him instead. He stands on it, as if it were his to keep, and whatever he might wish for there goes unspoken. Maybe there is something fitting in that. A place that has stopped performing what it was made for, and someone who, at least for today, doesn’t seem to need to either.
Through Jessica Neve’s styling, nothing here begs to be noticed. The clothes feel like his own. Navy knits settle around him like dusk come early, and even a grey Dior sweater beneath a blazer stays entirely unbothered by the grass he lies in. They move with him rather than around him, belonging to the landscape as easily as he appears to, their muted tones echoing the sky above.
Then there are the Samoyeds, a drift of white gathered close, as if a piece of the sky had come down to meet him. They come and go as they please, nosing in, wandering off, settling back again, the way only animals know how to be with someone. No conversation to keep up, nothing to explain. Just company that leaves solitude intact, and that may be the rarest kind there is.
As the day winds down, a swan pedal boat floats out across the water with him aboard, something from childhood, never quite forgotten. Where it is going hardly matters, and what is on his mind is anyone’s guess. The lake holds still, the clouds hold off, and for a while the afternoon asks nothing more of him than to drift. Out here, that might be more than enough.
