It's never too late to make a change in life. Issue 16, "Breaking Waves" is dedicated to those who believe in themselves enough to do so. Our editorial, "Skin & Other Stories" photographed by Editor-in-Chief, Cecilie Harris, is a deeply personal one. She tells a visual story linked to her personal journey of self-care and wellness as she enters a new chapter, turning fifty. It's much more than skincare.
Cecilie started documenting her skincare journey since the pandemic on her self-created platform, myfadingskin. She wanted to bring a version of her series, "Skin & Other Stories" to Boys by Girls in this print issue as our focus on mental health, self-care, and self-understanding tells the wider story found in the routine of skincare. The daily ritual of caring for your skin creates space for yourself as an individual, a glossy time where you can breathe a little slower and relax into yourself. Skincare routines need to be curated to suit your individual skincare needs - to soothe the redness on your cheeks, to fade the scar on your forehead from when you were a child, to smooth the lines carved into your face as memory of your stories. Your skin chronicles what the mind remembers.
In our editorial, each model is photographed individually but also as a collective, underscoring our "Breaking Waves" theme and showing the importance of individualism - intimate personal stories - to create a collective depth and purpose. Models Ayomide Onasanya, Harvey Jelley, Minseo Kyung, and Ashley Tsang feel noticeably at peace through the shoot, closing their eyes and leaning their heads back in Cecilie's lens. They find solace in the touch of a creamy serum, the scent of a soapy cleanser, and the feel of a soft moisturiser.
