There has never been a truer statement than ‘Boys will be boys’ and Xander Zhou knows it. For his Autumn/Winter ’13 titled ‘Homies’, he brilliantly combined a combination of elements representing the styles of many of the boys of London. A vintage military edge was also introduced into the collection alongside innovative cutting and sportswear fabrics and details. It was a meeting between classic menswear (both tailoring and sports) and the modern wardrobes of those cool kids.
Just like Matthew Miller had his boys emblazoned with the words ‘Born to fail’ Xander Zhou was all about those super cool guys who do what they want, walk the streets of London and with an I-don’t-care-what-people-think-of-me attitude (we all know they secretly do). With many of the looks came the words ‘Boys will be boys’ printed proudly across the chest, or subtly hidden on a cuff or collar.
Xander Zhou continued his exploration into deconstructed silhouettes this season, with large tailored coats and jackets being sent down the runway; styled with quirky man jewellery and chunky trainers. Streetwear met creative cutting in a union of technical elegance and striking signature pieces. Each of these experimental outerwear garments were teamed with classic menswear pieces, including white collared shirts and pin stripe trousers, and then super cool trainers or boots.

Oversized looks were also a key feature of the collection with sweatshirts being big and baggy, while coats were up-scaled and worn draped over the shoulders, creating broad silhouettes. Playing with length and volume, classic pieces were given a makeover with coats being extended and reshaped drastically and tops layered on top of one another.
Highlighting the essence of boyish mischief colours such as bright baby blue and splashes of red were set alongside the dark blacks and almost metallic greys on jackets. Zhou played with the use of placing strips of block colour against one another, across the body to create further structure on top of the geometric seams.
Cecilie Harris was given backstage access to the show, to snap some brilliant images of the boys as they prepared to hit the catwalk. If you haven't seen any of our other backstage features from the London Collections: Men, then make sure to check them out. Meanwhile we're going to get back to loving the cool mix of urban tailoring and sportswear!
