What does it mean to truly know someone…or yourself? It seems like such a straightforward thing. You know someone because of the details they’ve shared about themselves and their life. You know yourself because you inhabit your own skin, and spend an infinite amount of time diving into the recesses of your brain to learn more about who you are. For Gavin Leatherwood, though, knowing isn’t a one-stop destination - it’s an ongoing discovery process.
For us, we are rediscovering Gavin in this print issue. We last met him in 2020 in New York City. The last time we met him, he likened himself to a computer program whose basic functions were to create art and to connect with people. This time, he likens himself to a fisherman when he's creating art. We will never get tired of the extended metaphors that he peppers in while also telling you he "knows nothing at all." We talk about self-perception, finding peace in nature, how his career might soon threaten Tom Cruise, and how mood rings are "the shit."
His role in Netflix's It's What's Inside is also the shit.
Here is a sneak peek of our conversation:
I think we need to normalise adult-like wonder and even elder-like wonder. We're still here because we've got things to learn, and as soon as we stop and lose interest in why we're here, I feel like the game starts to end. You need to find a new way to reinvigorate yourself, which may come in the form of shaking up your experience or picking up something new. I don't know. But stay curious. If you're not curious then you're not discovering and if you're not discovering, then you're not living.
Captured by Elizabeth Weinberg, we lean heavily into the adult-like wonder and curiosity that Gavin describes. We explore abandoned attics, try to turn on a broken TV, and do pull-ups in LED-lit storefronts.
