City Stillness

21 October 2016
You buy a one way ticket to the big city, carrying on your back a rucksack of belongings and mixed emotions. Still grasping onto your crumbled ticket, you step onto the platform. The lunchtime train speeds past, hitting you with unfamiliar scents of a city. The hecticness has begun. Triggering a number of senses in your mind as you watch people run by careless to anyone outside of their own world. What is the rush?
That’s the beauty of stepping out of the station and turning down a dainty side street; finding silence and stillness. In this series, photographer Zuzanna Piontke captures the essence of urban solitude through her intimate lens. Maciek Knaś discovers that tranquility can be found in quiet surrounds and gritty building blocks. His face proud and strong, with eyes that echo the vulnerability of metropolitan life.

How much is time in solitude treasured, particularly in a big city? Where everyone is constantly trying to find their own place within it - however, amidst many skyscrapers and a crowd of people it can seem nearly impossible. This is why we often run away from crowded places, strolling along the side streets, hiding in abandoned buildings, and searching for comfort - all to have some time alone. We are all looking for our private hiding places, searching for peace of mind. A space in which we can easily breathe.
