“Dear Mother, in your pictures, you get me as I really am. Being in front of your lens feels normal.”

A 13 year old boy stands in the water. That’s what some people see. But in his mind this ocean is not part of the world we stand on. It is water in a different universe. His universe. He finds himself, a young ruler in a blue kingdom, with a staff in his hand that holds endless power. He might not look like a ruler, but his heart is strong enough to hold a thousand worlds in its grasp. He’s an adventurer. A crusader - honest and open. He is a boy that takes off his shoes and feels the ground beneath his feet, like electricity through his body. He is Jamie, Lord of the Waves.

This touching story from Spring Summer issue shows Jamie through the eyes of his mother, photographer Doreen Kilfeather. She and Jamie have discovered a connection like no other through photography. Jamie sees a world, a landscape, a story in everything he sees, and Doreen freezes these moments in a photograph. They’re designing dreams and creating characters, yet each one feels like the realest, purest version of themselves. Only a mother could know how to capture their son with such truth.
