Issue 13 out now

27 October 2017

Open. Accepting. Connecting. Those are words that mark a change unfolding, because a new generation of voices is catapulting onto the scene and commanding power: Generation Z. The torch has been delegated to these young faces to counter the expected, as they’ve become the bearers of responsibility for their generation. Social media has given rise to a new form of influencers, and it’s their task to navigate this new territory that is still so fresh in mind. Sharing has become the norm, so are they prepared to handle this newly formed power distribution? Are they expressing the correct things? Are they sharing too much? Are they sharing too little?

Issue 13, 'Tales of a new Generation' is our most substantial issue to date with 190 pages of soulful stories and imagery attempting to uncover the aforementioned questions. Our AW17 issue is 32 pages longer than previous issues, and has become a much more extended platform for conversation with more interviews and words than what we’ve previously offered. Honesty is what’s reflected on in this issue and understanding what it’s like to be growing up in the noisy reality of today, where everything is becoming ever so slightly more public. How is this young generation navigating social media and the pressures it creates? How does mental health play into the full picture? Some of the boys in this issue speak openly and heartedly about their own personal struggles with mental health, which then again reaffirms that the terms of masculinity are reshaping and redrawn.

'Riverdale' star Cole Sprouse grazes our talent cover, and Montell Martin at Select Models adorns the fashion cover. Drumroll - we’re excited to share that for the first time in Boys by Girls history, we’ve got a third cover for you to divulge in: a Saint Laurent Limited Edition cover. Issue 13, 'Tales of a new Generation', is filled with surprises and advances. This issue features 13 actors from productions such as 'Stranger Things', 'Riverdale', '13 Reasons Why', 'Lean on Pete', 'Gotham', 'Goodbye Christopher Robin, and much more. Film and TV are essential channels, so we’ve wanted to present you with the promising young actors who have already taken on the role of influencer and those who are about to.

We spoke to promising young talent like actor Charlie Plummer, who was recently awarded Best Young Actor Marcello Mastroianni Award at the Venice Film Festival for his portrayal as character Charley Thompson in film 'Lean on Pete'. Noah Schnapp and Finn Wolfhard who you can see in the second season of 'Stranger Things' starting today - along with other amazing acting talent such as Alex Lawther, Miles Heizer, David Mazouz, Nicholas Galitzine and many more. Also, we have our first ever BBG Diaries to appear in print: a stunningly curated photo and word diary from Japan by actor and filmmaker Connor Jessup. But not to fret, our usual boy at home stories and fashion stories are still intact throughout. Additionally, we’ve collaborated with a larger group of passionate female photography talent, 17 to be exact.

At the end of the day, this issue is all about being able to find peace of mind, for all of us, in a very noisy world. Happiness can be found in the simplest of things, which is what you’ll discover in this issue. So locate your silence tucked neatly in behind noise, and let your eyes feast on pages filled with beautiful stories that we’ve compiled with you in mind.

Issue 13’s talent cover features actor, Cole Sprouse. Photographer Danielle Levitt captures the young artist’s reflective self in Vancouver while on a day off from filming season two of Netflix’s original series 'Riverdale' - where he plays Jughead, who also happens to be the narrator of the show. Nature knocks, and stylist Julie Ragolia opens and welcomes the natural in, feeding the hunger for a silence that Cole seeks in the midst of the Canadian wild.

Montell Martin at Select Model Management fronts our Autumn Winter '17 fashion cover. Editor-in-Chief Cecilie Harris shoots Montell at home, where he lives with his mother and little brother, in the classic Boys by Girls fashion. As a result of his agreeable nature, he has sacrificed his interests for his little brother to have the bottom bit of the bunk bed. Fashion editor David Nolan fashions Montell in classic cuts, but with a dash of that playfulness, which reflects in his emotive self. His eyes are diverse and abundant, hinting at happiness, curiosity and melancholia, simultaneously, in each and every look.

Jordy Gerritsma, Freek Mol and Daniel Moritz at IMG Models represents Generation Z in our Saint Laurent Limited Edition cover. Cecilie Harris captures the boys in absolute camaraderie dressed in head-to-toe Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello. Fashion editor David Nolan knows how to provide them with the necessary looks to achieve the modern boy mentality.
