“We’re all one big eco-system. People deserve to be happy being who they are, and for most of history people haven’t been allowed to be - it’s something worth fighting for.”
One of my most joyful moments as part of the creation of our Spring Summer issue, “Young Hearts”, was my conversation with Canadian Actor Connor Jessup. Sometimes you just have those conversations that you don't want to stop. You know what I mean? Known for his roles in “American Crime” and “Falling Skies”, his most recent project is an absolutely must-see independent film titled “Closet Monster” - an absolutely stunning movie that safely makes it onto my list as one of my favorite coming-of-age movies I've seen in a really long time. In addition to giving you an insight into this and his other prominent roles, our conversation also go into depth about the experience of growing up. For big parts of his life, Connor grew up on film and TV sets surrounded by adults, bringing his stories a different perspective than his fellow millennials. He talks about his generation, masculinity - re-occurring conversation topics throughout this issue - and how it’s all fluid.
Dani Brubaker, my LA visionary queen, takes Connor to her secret spot. Together they play, doing their favorite thing; storytelling. The black and white image series grace the eight page feature like a mini movie of it’s own. Stylist Lauren Knudsen, brings casual garments to the surface, strengthening the timeless feel of the visuals.
It is his honest and authentic voice that has you holding onto every word. I get lost in time learning about Connor’s passion to tell stories and communicating the right messages. Most importantly, Connor reminds me of my own passion for what I do, the importance of the stories we tell and the impact they can make, no matter how small or large your voice is. He reminds me that the most important thing of all is to find our purpose and what makes us happy.
His passion grows beyond the characters he plays. Connor wants more, he wants to create. It is this drive and true connection with storytelling that is so appealing, and you can’t help but wanting to follow what is to come from the talented young actor and director. At only 22, the world is an open landscape.
