Stomping the Ground

6 March 2019

When winter comes, the land is left to the elements. The treads of boots that walked the fields in adventures passed, fill with muddy waters. Rivers meander their paths unheard, and the winds blow from horizon to horizon. Nature continues to move and roar, performing its daily dance for nobody, except those of us who revel in the emptiness. In this story, Jake is those of us. A boy who throws on a sweater, ties up his boots and stomps the ground, alone in the expanse. And happy.

Photographer Katy Thomas explores Falmouth’s horizons with Jake Ashley at Established Models in this series of an outdoor pursuit. Katy’s taste for the outdoors is the perfect match for Jake, a farm boy in his spare time and no stranger to the land. He’s at home as his boots sink into the mud, and the wind throws his hair to and from his face. Katy captures his mood, pensive and tranquil like the waters running behind, as he playfully kicks at the stems that rise above the grass.

It's a series that exudes our peace in nature. The crack of twigs underfoot can almost be heard as the two of them wander together; their footprints the only tracks in the ground. It’s one of those days that blows out the cobwebs, soothes the mind, and leaves a dusty layer of mud on your hands as you make your way home. It’s just the land, the elements, and you.
