Portraits Of Danny

27 November 2014

The dynamics of the room change even before he enters it. Carelessly styled hair falls just over his shoulders as he compulsively pushes it backwards only for it to fall forwards again, silence fills the room as people’s eyes start to wander. A mist of cigarette smoke and tattoos. Photographer Jenna Putnam spends the day with NY model Danny Mannix as they create gritty images that look like they’ve been pulled straight out of the 90s.

Danny’s quite literal, otherworldly looks, appear to detach him from most other boys. After even just glancing at Danny the regular and mundane can only grow duller and duller. Stylist Sheyna Imm creates this anarchistic character in Danny, styling him in black leather by BLK DNM and cut up tees by the likes of Unif and Alexander Wang. He’s the understated misfit that everybody covertly wants to know more about.

Illustrated in monochromatic images, Jenna Putnam creates the most appealing atmosphere using a subtle grain in her photos. Her use of prosaic locations brings all focus onto Danny, the grain matching his somewhat hard exterior, but a subtle softness in the more candid images, as if we were watching from a distance. It’s as though the more you see of Danny the less you know. As the shoot nears an end it's recognisable he is pretty alien to most people, and he’s probably one of those characters that will forever remain a mystery. But with a surname like Mannix you sort of have to be interesting don’t you?
