Matt Ardell For “Lessons”

24 October 2013

After eagerly awaiting the launch of our fifth issue, “Lessons”, we bring you this exclusive preview of our “From Brooklyn to Manhattan” editorial. This beautiful photographic series by Boys by Girls’ very own Georgie Wileman poetically captures Matt Ardell’s journey as he relocates from Brooklyn to Manhattan to begin his life as a college student this Autumn. As Georgie herself has also recently moved to New York, this shoot depicts a visual journey, following both photographer and model as they explore the captivating and iconic city together.

They say a picture speaks a thousand words, but it’s impossible to fully appreciate the unique wit and disposition of DNA’s Matt Ardell without hearing what this charmingly cool NY kid has to say (or without stalking his Twitter and Instagram, we just couldn't resist). Boys by Girls are always striving to paint honest portraits of the models, letting their unique characteristics and quirks transcend through the photographs and this shoot is certainly no exception. Completely unstyled, Matt is captured in his natural habitat wearing a classic youthful uniform, including pieces by Adidas and JanSport, as he moves and glides through the city.

This series is one of two from “Lessons” shot in New York. The locations featured in this shoot capture and celebrate the spirit of transit and change, as we witness Matt riding the subway and moving into his college dorm. A seamless mix of documentary and fashion photography offers a visual diary, punctuated by Matt’s boyish look, which is framed by his cool hair cut and accentuated by those great lips. He’s a favourite of Yves Saint Laurent having walked for the French fashion house multiple times, which comes as no surprise given his haunting image and rich features.

Keep your eyes open for a stunning portrait of the NY native on the back inside cover of our upcoming “Lessons” issue, which you can buy here. With his nonchalant charm and effortlessly breezy aura, Matt really is one of the coolest kids in town.
