John Lawrence Sullivan SS18

6 March 2019

Science Fiction vs. Virtual Reality. The science geeks are back for their revenge and this time they’ve had a growth spurt, they’re now in command - taking no prisoners. The Sci-fi Fan Strikes Back. For 40 years, they've been sat quietly up in their rooms, waiting for their retrofuturistic resurrection, and the time is finally upon us. Let the reunion of space-age and New Age commence.

With their hands firmly in their front pockets, models showcased John Lawrence Sullivan’s menswear and womenswear collection with grit, stamping the runway with purpose in their heavy boots – a power to match the legendary boxer that the brand is named after. Distressed leather jackets were juxtaposed with shiny pleather trousers as the maroon leather that dominated JLS’s last collection had been tweaked to red. Angry and vengeful reds clashed with purple amongst the moody adolescent blacks. Matrix sunglasses and shiny hoodies with zips created retro intergalactic vibes, which were enhanced by the hair and grooming - remember when ‘Friends’ did flashback episodes to the 80s? And you know Chandler’s hair in those episodes? That.

The teen-angst vibes were matured with oversized suiting, pinstripes and sleeveless blazers that transported tailoring into the future while reviving the geek within us all. Shout “take me to your leader” and you’ll be introduced to Arashi Yanagawa, Japanese designer and founder of John Lawrence Sullivan whose limits go beyond the sky. With his SS18 collection that shook the audience, it seemed to be no coincidence that Yanagawa’s first name translates to ‘big storm’.
