We witnessed a Teletubbies x Bobby Abley SS18 show - it happened, trust us. We were left in awe, a worthwhile LOL moment - if it's allowed to say that during fashion week? Bobby Abley stayed true to his love for fantasy - with this show we were teleported into Teletubbyland with Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laalaa and Po. You just found yourself singing the tune, right? Other than celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Teletubbies, Bobby Abley's 'Messy Fun' collection gave us a whole lot to chew on this time (in right fashion); everything from a tribute to his late grandmother to the collaboration ‘Love Choc - Love Abley’ with ‘I Love Choc’ founder Alex Chao.
Lights dimmed, the upbeat 'Took the Night' by Chelley pulsated the room and out came models in bright attire - all colour-coded into sections of pink, blue, red, yellow, green and purple. The show had it all - cow print trousers, jackets and hats inspired by the oh-so fashionable lime green Dipsy and his top hat, character sweatshirts, tassels, straps, bucket hats, his traditional toy bear logo in backpack form and not-so surprising at this point, Teletubby backpacks. Bobby Abley also had a hidden political agenda - hoodies and coats bearing the EU-passport’s burgundy colour and the slogan ‘Foreign Friends’ - possibly a commentary on the detrimental Brexit vote. Now, what stood out most perhaps - the hair. Women’s locks prepped into antenna like hairstyles and men with a twist on the familiar boy band spiked hair. Yes, that happened. It was great.
The show left us with big smiles spread across our faces and warm fuzzy feelings originating in our bellies. Dipsy, seemingly the favourite character of Abley, closed the show with a bang. Characters on the catwalk was a thing this season, let’s not forget Liam Hodges’ scary bear - although we favoured cheerful Dipsy.
The only thing left to say now is “Eh-oh!”
