BBG Diaries: Joakim In Paris

11 November 2015

The large, formidable structure stands above you, it’s components twisted into a regulated pattern. Your camera swings methodically from your shoulder, whistling in the fraught wind. A nasal fog wraps itself around you, reminding you of the chill in the air, and your scarf that has fallen from it’s place around your neck. A brief sigh of awe reminds you that your friends stand by your side, they too embargoed by the anticipation of a new city and undiscovered streets to explore.

"There's just something about the whole atmosphere in Paris that makes me want to observe and create things. It's an amazing place and if it weren't for the fact that I can't speak French properly I'd definitely move there, no doubt."

Some call Paris a city frayed by love, but for Joakim, a Norwegian, young photographer currenty living in London, it is a plentiful city to explore and capture through his lens. In a series of monochromatic, subtly idle frames he captures himself and his companions, as they befriend the walls of the city, run through the streets and catch their breath, as that similar spike of a stitch crawls up your left side. Inhale, exhale. Breath the city, breathe the adventure. Follow Joakim in this BBG Diaries series, as he captures his meanders thoughtfully, encapsulating pockets of Paris that could be anybodies. Today they are his.

As Joakim explores Paris in more depth, cherish the idea that photos are something that can be mesmerising artefacts that stay with you. Reminders of laughs that cascaded across the rooms, streets you were lost in, and new shoes that gave you blisters. The rucksack that made your shoulders sore, as you reached stubbornly for the new view, focusing on it, clicking, saving it for later.

"I really love the image of my best friend and her boyfriend on the steps to the apartment we were staying in, as well as the one of my friends' legs when they're all sitting on the wall. However I think out of all the images in this series, my favourite has to be the one of the woman on the street, carrying the H&M bag. She was such an interesting character, walking in front of me for ages and ages with this bag on her hand and the leopard purse over her shoulder. These kinds of situations are very interesting to me and I start wondering about who they are, what they do, where they are from and where they're going."
