LCM: Paul Smith SS15

18 June 2014

Paul Smith is synonymous with British eccentric, no prizes then for guessing the location of his SS15 show. Savile Row provided an appropriately British setting for the shoesmith’s collection in the form of the Hauser & Wirth gallery. Mini bacon filled bagels and green ice tea circulated the room as we watched people clock that yes, Smith was simply presenting two rooms of shoes - simple as.

Phyllida Barlow crayola-box art hung on pristine white walls looking down on what we’re now calling ‘Paul’s Plinth’ in the first room. A single brogue in each colour of the rainbow was lined on ‘Paul’s Plinth’ through the middle of the gallery.

In the adjoining room a more casually placed batch of 40 four-hole Oxford shoes - half mens, half womens was on display. Two tone Chelsea boots, brushed velvet slip ons, and loafers in aubergines, tangerines, corals and roses. The man, the Smith, the legend was casually wandering between the rooms and cheekily posing for iPhone happy visitors.
