LCM: Katie Eary AW14

9 January 2014

Katie Eary is one of my all time favourite designers. Why? Maybe it's because of that "don't give a shit" attitude, or her love for bright, silky prints. Or her incredibly well thought out concepts that make her collections seem like more of a form of fine art. Or just how cool her streetwear is, or maybe even just because of how cool she is.

Due to my undying love for Katie Eary, I was so eager to see what the female menswear designer had in store for us this season. What Katie does best is she combines something comforting and light-hearted with something so opposing; something dark and terrifying. The result is always beautiful, and this season it came in the form of oversized mickey mouse silhouettes with rainbow pony manes, bonded jackets and parachute skirts.

Titled "Bipolar", the influences and inspirations of Katie's AW14 collection stem from far and wide. One of the main inspirations was the novel "Filth" by Irvine Welsh, whom she talks about in our exclusive interview with Katie for Boys by Girls issue 6 "Lessons". Distorted faces are stamped on garments "portraying the lead character's remorseless struggle with depravity". The collection explores the obsessive world in which we live in today, the opposite ends of extreme spectrums merged together.

Katie also made a pretty SUPA duper choice with a complete Supa Model line up - the gorgeous Coastal Cities' Sean Semmens opened the show, and the rest of the team included Claes, Frederik, Ed and Lauri, amongst others. The show was styled by the one and only Way Perry, who also happens to be our contributing editor - read more about him here. The styling perfected the show, allowing the collection to stand out even more and really come together - another thing that stuck out for me was definitely the Nike air pythons with their contrasting colours and amazing circular laces.

I will leave you will this beautiful statement from the Katie Eary AW14 press release:

"All in all, Bi-Polar is a collection about the extremes in our culture, in our fashions, and in our selves. It's a collection that understands that bad can be beautiful, and that beautiful can be bad. And it doesn't fear the darkness that lies behind all of us."
